After Iron Widow, Xiran Jay Zhao released the second opus to the series The Celestial Kingdom: Heavenly Tyrant. The Canadian author dips into Chinese mythology, whilst making a social commentary. The main character’s quest is to find their place in the world, as the redefine their own role, as they are navigating the political and sociological complexities.The strong sense of autonomy and gender dynamics are at the very core of what is motivating the main character, Zetian, as they are faced with friends, enemies and society. The emotional depth reaches a new high, adding new layers to the plot.Xiran Jay Zhao, once again, found a way to get her point across through her newest fantasy novel.
