"Her side of the story" is the main character's - Alessandra - look back on her life, her youth during the rise of fascism in Italy, and the aftermath of Mussolini's fall, particularly centered around the women in her life. It starts with her mother, as she cannot escape her marriage, suffering her whole life from the patriarchal system. This then leads Alessandra to act rebellious. Even later, as she meets a man she admires, she realises that his views as well are skewed by the patriarchy. This historical fiction novel depicts the difficulty of being a woman in Italy around this time.
