What patterns do we use to represent knowledge of the world? Mapping Knowledge Across Time asks difficult questions by opening seven books side by side, medieval and modern, European and Asian, including German design masterpieces: Nuremberg Chronicle, Physikalischer Atlas, World Geo-Graphic Atlas. What do we record and what do we ignore when we map the world? How do we create a picture of the past on the page? Where do we locate the future? How do the parts of the world connect? This book compares shapes and patterns arranged on book pages across eight centuries, curating visualizations of knowledge that help us see the world today.Paul Kahn is an information designer and author whose engagement with visualization of large knowledge structures began with hypertext research in the 1980s. He is the author of several books, founder design studios and lecturer at universities in the US and in France.
